This riddle is a double.
Jan. 27th, 2011 12:52 pm(And meant to be told by a sphinx, lamia, or magpie-eating fey).
These that I pick from my teeth
Build cities, e'en kingdoms, when strong
Hold up each mind from beneath
And when broken or bent, do great wrong.
Got another handwritten page yesterday, and am now definitively more than 2/3rds done with Sir Dinadan's Tale, which may or may not need a better title. Starling-Eater and Magpie-Eater have been vanquished by riddling, and only Raven-Eater, their eldest brother, remains. And I need to figure out a real bastard of a riddle for him to tell -- both a difficult riddle, and a riddle that somehow raises the stakes, ups the narrative tension, and reinforces the themes of both Sir Dinadan's Tale and The Knight of the Star, Part II. I expect that today I will write everything right up to the critical moment where the riddle is told, and once I have a workable riddle, I'll finish the rest the same day. I know how all the little fiddly bits work. It's just, you know, the centerpiece of the climax that I am missing. Anyway, the plan is that I will finish that some time this weekend, give it a single editing pass to extract it from the novel growing around it, and post it here no later than February 2nd.
Hold me to that, okay guys?
So: later on today I'll be posting again to reassure you and myself that I did get my words for the day written. At that time, I'll either be making a post about music, or a post with excerpts. Which would my public prefer? And is there a particular project whose soundtrack you want to hear about, or a particular story or stories you'd like a glimpse at?
