Caffeinated.
Dec. 28th, 2011 01:13 pmI started writing up a story version of my swashbuckling pirate dream, even though I have, at minimum, three short stories, one LARP, and one novel that should be taking precedence. Sigh. Hopefully my New Years' resolutions and recapping will help get me sorted again; they did an amazing job of it last year (er, except on the weight loss front. shhhh.)
This has been a slow, lazy week in a lot of unexpected ways. My brother Thomas is visiting, which I greatly enjoy. When I went away for college we weren't as close as I would have liked, but then, two years ago, he came up to live with me to do a year of post-secondary at my alma mater. We talked, we read, we gamed, we watched many of the same things, and he became one of my best friends, and one of Megan's as well. (in fact, my dad keeps feeling suspicious and uncomfortable about how close he and Megan are, which just... well. My father. What can I say. Not a concern for me, at any rate.) There was one uncomfortable point when he was going to have a place of his own, and did not, and lived with Megan and I for a while again last fall, and towards the end of that I was feeling less friendly... but that has little to do with him or me, and a lot to do with situational stress, and I am positively delighted to be able to spend a week hanging out with him.
In vaguely related news, my youngest brother, Luke, is probably going to attend Concordia as well, starting next fall, and while he is going to be living on campus and not in my spare bedroom, I am still very much looking forward to that. The Luke I knew, the Luke who lives in my head still in contravention of all evidence, is a little kid with a lot of determination and focus, some temper problems, and not very many people skills. The Luke who will go to Concordia is a 6'4" actor, singer, athlete, and academic ace. He seems like a really cool guy, and I cannot wait to get to know him, to be better friends with him.
Anyway, back to my lazy week. I had a friend over the day before yesterday -- the inestimable Chris Ovre, of apocalyptic virgin-exploiting fame, one of my oldest and best college friends; and one of three roommates I never got sick of (I share space poorly. Of the other two roommates, one is Mike, who I think I have mentioned before, and the third I am married to. So.). As always, the only difficult part of the visit was our tendency to say a Minnesota Goodbye, which on one occasion in the past did actually lead to him extending his visit by an extra day. Tomorrow I have another friend over. There's none of the usual gaming, what with all the wee college students home for the holidays. So apart from writing, I am watching cartoons and Netflix, and... not doing much else. Sleeping in, a great luxury. Doing chores with the same glacial speed I generally do. Reading books an author sent me to review (and how exciting is that? VERY! Reviews pending, must finish trilogy first).
I guess it sounds very much like many of my weeks. But it's mush more languid and lackadaisical, I promise.
Okay. Enough rambly warm-up. Time to go attend to that word count.
How are your holidays going?
