Twenty-seven day countdown...
May. 1st, 2012 12:41 pm... until my twenty-eighth birthday! My golden birthday, in fact. And while I do not expect gifts from any of you, I like talking about stuff I want and I figure what the Hell, it never hurts to make my wishlist public. If anyone is inspired to get me anything, you can co-ordinate with
elf_amazon to make sure you're not duplicating what someone else got me.
Ten Things Matt Wants For His Birthday
1) I'd love to see more people microlending on kiva.org Kiva supports families and entrepreneurs in the developing world, networking many people so that small $25 loans can add up to the thousands needed to make a difference. Right now, new users can make a $25 loan without actually spending any of their own money! 98.9% of loans are repaid in full, and you get to help make the world a better place. Obviously this one does not directly benefit me, but I've wanted to participate in microlending for years, and do not have the personal resources to do so. If I can convince other people to get involved, well, that's a great gift as far as I'm concerned.
2) Paid time on Dreamwidth. My account just expired, and I am bummed as a result. I wouldn't be using paid time on Livejournal anymore, and I'm still exploring all the differences and advantages of Dreamwidth.
3) Fate in Fallen London. It's by far my favorite browser game, and I've explored all the free content available at this time. If you play, I'd love to hear from you (my profile is over here), but I'd really like to support these developers and to explore the paid content, which Fate is used to purchase. Got some but more is always good.
4)This blank shield or one like it. Early this summer, I'm planning to show up in costume somewhere, and an actual-factual shield would be a fantastic prop. Rarely have I been so excited about owning something that is not a book, movie, or game. Got it!
5) In the same vein, this very inexpensive sword or one even vaguely like it. One-handed, not a rapier, no overly ornate designs, decent-looking sword or sword replica. Again, a costume prop. This one not only fits my criteria very nicely but is also ludicrously inexpensive, hence why I linked to it. Got one like it!
6) Pathfinder RPG books. I do not yet have any, and it's currently my preferred edition of D & D (I do not care for fourth edition very much).
7) Other books. Um. I was going to link to my SFBC wishlist here, but it appears the link only shows people their own wishlists. Looking into this so I do not have to type out twenty-two book titles. I guess you could also get me free books by joining the club yourself, which actually, I highly recommend. You get hardcover books for between $10 and $20, usually, there are frequent sales, the purchase requirements are low and the opening deal is usually 6 books for $1 (plus shipping). The really great deal is how many omnibus editions they have available.
8) Commissions! I write fantasy and science fiction (but I'm open to other genres) for 5 cents per word, I deliver quickly (1 day + 1 day/thousand words; though more time to edit is always appreciated), and I will write to order any prompt you like. I made $400 doing this last year, you may recall, and had a lot of fun besides (as well as learning a fair amount about writing that I didn't know).
9) New about magazines or anthologies looking for submissions, especially if you think some of my existing work might be especially appropriate. Help writing novel summaries and agent letters. Help figuring out what makes a good portfolio or resume for a writer. Putting in a good word with anyone anywhere hiring any sort of writer for any sort of job. Basically, networking assistance in furthering my career would be a fantastic gift in any form. My own neuroses really get in my way on this one, so I am very grateful for any help.
10) Feedback on my fiction? It's an ego thing, but it's also a honing-my-craft thing. Whether it's appreciative comments or concrit, on my fanfic at AO3 or my filtered original fiction posts here (comment to be added to the filters, as always!), nothing brightens my day more than someone leaving a comment on something I have written. Now that I have all that crude materialism out of the way, this would definitely be my highest priority.
And that's it.
