Scripture and homosexuality.
May. 9th, 2012 01:36 pmMost of this post is a quotation from a discussion (a surprisingly civil one!) taking place elsewhere on the Internet. A discussion of gay rights and NC's abhorrent Amendment One caused several Christians to speak up -- people who are appalled by the evangelical hatred and bigotry they see, and who advocate compassion and understanding towards gay people, but who still feel called by scripture to oppose homosexual behavior, and are very anguished about their inability to resolve this contradiction.
I am far more concerned by the people (gay and straight) who are harmed by this vicious piece of legislation than I am by unaffected people's hurt feelings... but as a bisexual Christian, I am also so sick of the pernicious and untrue arguments that claim scripture has anything explicit and condemnatory to say about homosexuality. I want to make a post here that I can link back to as a resource later, so I can attempt to educate these people without having to repeat myself, again and again. I know many of you won't find this discussion particularly relevant, but as someone who finds dissecting and arguing scripture interesting and worthwhile into and of itself, well, clearly I disagree, and this post is for me, not for you.
That said, discussion on these arguments, dissenting, agreeing, refining, correcting for my own biases, blind spots, and prejudices, is always welcome, whether or not that discussion references scripture. Pointing out verses I missed that either support or oppose my view is always appreciated as well.
