It's still summer now, but we've had a series of blustery days, the leaves in the tree outside the picture window have begun to yellow, and it's ironic but true that the closer we come to the season where everything dies, the more I feel alive.

I feel much the same about Autumn. My favourite season, although Spring comes close.

It is true that Minnesota has better Octobers than ANYONE ANYWHERE. We should have an October Day just to celebrate. And it should be in, like, June or something.

I prefer winter--our autumn just tends to be rain, rain, rain, while the frost gets a better grip once November creeps in. (I prefer being cold to cold and damp.) I love the pale sunrises and the defiant sunsets as night creeps in. I love walking to work in the morning during December with my travel coffee mug, breathing in the frosty air and passing the Christmas decorations. It used to be my few moments of quiet and calm before getting to work and being driven mad by retail Christmas, lol.

Although I should point out that Ireland is extremely weird: we base our seasons around the Celtic calendar, solstices and equinoxes. So we consider Autumn to be August, September and October--not September, October and November. Our winter season starts in November. But as a result, the longest and shortest days of the year fall around the middle of our summer and winter, so it's pretty neat.

Every Irish kid is taught this as a kid, but it's never explained that the rest of the world follows different patterns. I only realised when I cheerfully told my British flatmate a week ago that Autumn was here and was met with a blank look.
