Young children's ability to self-regulate their behavior in the pre-k and kindergarten years is a predictor for literacy skills in later life. The better the control, the better the skills.
In that case, me and 2/3rds of my siblings are statistical outliers -- I'm not saying that in an attempt to disagree with the overall conclusion, just being interested by my family's divergence from it. Horribly behaved impulsive kids, all voracious and compulsive readers.
One indicator/factor among many. Also, not sure if it is just skills (like reading stamina, decoding ability, etc) or if enjoyment is included. I've had to read many literacy reports lately for some elementary schools and the specialist has included this tidbit of info in all of them.
