Dear Yulegoat;
Nov. 22nd, 2011 01:06 pmThis year I requested:
Brother Cadfael - Ellis Peters
Characters: Brother Cadfael, Hugh Beringar
Details: I like monastic fiction, and the sedate pace of contemplative life. I like debate, banter, and conflict. I like Cadfael's understanding of human nature. And I love casefic.
The books do a lot of artificially or situationally putting Hugh and Cadfael on different sides of a conflict. I would like to see them genuinely disagreeing about something and working against one another (in a friendly but still serious way), as they did in One Corpse Too Many.
Batgirl (Comic)
Characters: Cassandra Cain. Stephanie Brown
Details: Cass and Steph are my favorite bat-characters. I like caper stories and casefic, and I like watching them interact with one another, and the rest of the bat-family as well (especially Tim, Damian, and Dick). I am unlikely to complain about any story that includes those elements, whether it's gen, het, or femslash.
The Book of the New Sun - Gene Wolfe
Character: Severian
Details: What I like most about these books is the lush, byzantine weirdness of the worldbuilding. Any story about Severian that includes Wolfe-esque complexity and imagination would be much appreciated.
There isn't too much more to say than that, honestly. If you're writing Cadfael, I would very much appreciate sticking to book canon rather than TV canon; the depictions of Hugh especially were spotty at best on the show. Any timeframe is fine, any subject... my favorite minor characters are Olivier, Brother Mark, and Avice/Sister Magdalene, and I would be delighted to see any or all of them appear, but it certain;y isn't necessary.
While I do want to see Cadfael and Hugh at odds with one another, I want them to still be friends I am very nostalgic for their clever, affectionate rivalry in One Corpse Too Many.
If you're writing Batgirl, I really don't have any more to say. If you're familiar enough with canon to be offering, I trust that you find the contrast of Steph's vivacious, affable motor-mouthing and Cass's silence or curt expressiveness as adorable as I do. Showcasing the two of them as friends, at any stage in their careers or canons, interacting and fighting crime, is all I need. No shipping either with Dick, please, but either with Tim, Damian, one another, or any permutation possible of that is fine; gen is fine too. If there is het, slash, or femslash, it can be as implicit or explicit as you like; I like sweet romances and I like porn too.
Finally, with Book of the New Sun, I like the clashes between Severian's awkwardness and his confidence; they make him relatively unpredictable in his interactions. I love the weird details of culture, architecture, history, science... the sublime and believable unreality of the world. Whatever else happens in the story, the world is as much a character as Severian himself is, I think.
All right. That's all I've got. If you have any questions whose answers would help you, I have enabled anonymous commenting. Otherwise, good luck! I appreciate your efforts on my behalf, and look forward to seeing what you come up with.
