Two options:
"Ile avait ete decu en decouvrant a quel point es gamins de sa classe, a neuf ans tout juste, etaient deja blases et cyniques."
No idea what that means, of course. I was mistakenly shipped a copy of Le Diable s'habille en Prada, and it was closest to hand. Translations appreciated.

"The truth inevitably trickled out, and I only escaped the Proctor's bulldogs by moments."
