To be fair to Luther, pretty much every pamphleteer of that period wrote like that, but Luther's the only one who non-specialists have heard of (other than Thomas More, but then he wrote some remarkably insulting things about Luther, too). I don't think it's so much Luther's personal psychology as that they were angry times and the way people argued reflects that.
