But I wouldn't know anything about that, I went to bed at three last night and have no idea why I'm up and energetic now.  I had two cups of chocolate coffee yesterday afternoon and evening, but... that was yesterday.

In any case, while I don't know why I'm up, I know why I'm awake - I had a dream in which a good friend of mine (not a real friend, someone who the dream presented to me as a good friend) turned out to be a mafia assassin, and I was fleeing through downtown Fargo trying to get to a gunstore sufficiently in advance of him, after leaving the local mall looking like a war zone.  I had his girlfriend on my side, though, which made me feel better, as she'd been equally oblivious about his double life as some sort of Jason Statham conflicted antihero movie character.  I woke up with my heart pounding, still mentally half a block from Wal-Mart, and decided I didn't want to drift off again and find myself in a gunfight.

So, here I am awake.

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching
spiritual death.
"

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the cost of the Iraq war we could have built and funded enough hospitals and schools in every third world country on Earth to the same density that we have them in the United States.  And I think we would have done more to fight terrorism and hatred of the United States had we done so.  Not to mention do more to show ourselves a nation that truly embraces the Christian value of charity, something the fundamentalists and Islamophobes always seem to overlook.  I think Pat Robertson's remarks on Haiti are a pretty clear sign of just how close to spiritual death we as a nation are or at least, us Christians.  I see plenty more Christian behavior every day from pagans, Jews, and atheists than I do from the majority of those who label themselves Christian.

"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence."

Two more quotes by the man himself that resonate with me:

"Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted."

and

“Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.”

The first one gives me hope.  The second one gives me a challenge.

In other news, did anyone try to post a couple minutes ago and get something... unusual... instead of the update screen?  Because I did.  And I fear you will never believe me without corroboration.

To get both my blogging and my fictionwriting wordcount up, a meme.  Detail is appreciated.

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character (within reason, I obviously have to know the fandom/characters). In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.
